The cream of Sheffield hospitality industry came together last night (Thursday 27th February), to celebrate the 17th annual SCR Hospitality Awards in the stunningly refurbished Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria’s Ballroom.
The greatest showman themed event, brought to life in spectacular fashion by AV company and sponsors Sounds Commercial, hosted by BBC Radio Sheffield’s Tom Ingall, celebrated the very best of those who work behind the scenes in the hospitality industry, to ensure that every guest, every tourist and every corporate visitor, has a great visit, and indeed wants to return, to the region.
The SCR Hospitality Association represents hotels across Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley, South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. The not-for-profit association works with its members to raise awareness about issues affecting the hospitality industry and work with partner organisations to attract major events and visitors to the region.
interim Chair of SCR Hospitality Association, said: “As well as congratulating the Unsung Heroes, experts in Front of House and hospitality veterans receiving a Lifetime Achievement Awards, we were encouraged to see the wealth of young talent coming through the ranks in terms of bright new apprentices, and Best newcomers.
“Not only does the hospitality industry in this region have much to celebrate with some exceptional colleagues already working in the industry, It is a thriving industry to begin a career, and for many, provides a fast-track vocation from a junior entry-level position to deputy or hotel general manager in a relatively short space of time.”
The Awards is one of the first events to take place in the newly refurbished legendary ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria. There is a clear style design statement in favour of classic modernity with the £4 million design and refurbishment of the 105 luxurious rooms and suites, Ballroom and reception areas, the Grand and Club Lounge, giving a new sophisticated look and feel.
The glamourous Ballroom was a fitting backdrop to a night of celebration, here are just a few of the highlights:
Apprentice of the Year went to Kellie Carter of Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria. The judges said Kellie conveyed a real passion for cooking, developing menus and developing her own skills and is a great role model for other young women looking to make a career cooking in a professional kitchen.
On the other end of the scale, Bob Leeming, Holiday Inn Rotherham Sheffield, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The judges loved Bob’s attitude coming into hospitality at 44 following redundancy. Now in his late 60s, he doesn’t want to retire and is described by his colleagues as ‘the face of the hotel.’
The judges said of Joint Winner of the Customer Service Front of House, Daranee Batty, Cutlers Hotel, ‘Any hotel would love to have a dozen Daranees as she brings Four Seasons standards to a little bit of Sheffield and praised her amazing work ethic.
Paul Gosney, Business Development Director of City Taxis, sponsors of the People’s Choice Award, presented Jessica Crookes, Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria with the trophy as the winner of the public vote. People and community are at the heart of City Taxis and its story of partnerships and innovation have been woven into the fabric of the Sheffield city region since 1980 when it began with 34 cars. It’s since grown into a foundation of a community of 2,000 drivers and over 2.4 million riders and continues to be a great supporter of the SCR Hospitality Awards.
Best Newcomer is a new category for 2020 and David Wells, Wortley Hall, was its inaugural winner. The judges loved David’s ‘hands-on’ refurbishment of the restaurant, reintroducing original features, above and beyond his actual job of restaurant supervisor.
Kelly Daley of Sounds Commercial presented the Mercure Sheffield Parkway with the Top Team Award. The judges said that they demonstrated a unified, multi-skilled one team approach and epitomised the very essence of teamwork and award-winning customer service.
As well as celebrating the cream of the region’s hospitality industry, guests were asked to support the SCR Hospitality Association’s charity of the year, The Children’s Hospitality Charity. They generously raised nearly two thousand pounds towards this much-loved charity which currently has an appeal to raise £14.25m to transform the hospital environment, including funds to build an on-site helipad for major trauma patients who arrive via helicopter when every second counts.
