Sheffield’s leading hotels are training the next generation of talent in traditional skills as part of a new apprenticeship scheme.
Hospitality Sheffield and The Sheffield College have joined forces to launch a one-year hospitality apprenticeship pilot.
Fourteen apprentices in front of house and commis chef roles at the Copthorne Hotel Sheffield, DoubleTree Sheffield Park, Kenwood Hall Hotel and Mosborough Hall Hotel are taking part in the scheme, which started earlier this academic year.
The pilot hospitality apprenticeship is aimed at developing the skills and qualifications of existing staff at four hotels. If the trial proves successful following an evaluation, it will be rolled out to more businesses and new recruits to the industry in the next academic year.
Kate Stenton, Human Resources and Development Manager, Copthorne Hotel Sheffield, who is a member of Hospitality Sheffield, said: “We need more people with the right skills to train in the hospitality industry, particularly in some of the basic craft service skills and etiquette.”
She added: “We know there is some great potential hospitality talent in Sheffield. Our aim is to nurture and keep it in the city. Our industry offers exciting job opportunities, and we want new lifeblood coming through. This trial scheme is our response to that challenge. We are pleased that The Sheffield College is supporting us, given its strong reputation in the catering and hospitality sector.”
The apprentices train in the workplace and spend time studying in the classroom at The Sheffield College’s City campus on Granville Road. They include Rhiannah Toppin, aged 23, Food and Beverage Assistant.
Rhiannah said: “I’m enjoying meeting other colleagues from the industry and understanding we all have the same aims, but with different constraints and challenges, although some challenges are similar. I hope the course will give me the confidence to be able to gain promotion within the workplace.”

The award-winning Sheffield College has a national reputation for catering and hospitality, and offers a range of bakery, catering and hospitality and patisserie courses. The £1.2 million catering wing has industry standard equipment and comprises six training kitchens including a bakery and patisserie.
Special features include bread retarders and prover ovens, six walk in fridges, blast freezers, top of the range ovens, a sous vide suite, a smoking machine for fish, and ice cream machines. There are individual bespoke workstations for each student and an interactive white board in each kitchen.
Catering and hospitality staff have strong connections to industry, including being Master Chefs of Great Britain, leading to high level skills development, work placements and job opportunities for those they teach.
